In Surguja, we call this unique forest plant Lakda. 🌿

In Surguja, we call this unique forest plant Lakda. 🌿 It has a naturally sour taste and is widely used to prepare a flavorful chutney that is loved by local communities. Its leaves are cooked into a delicious leafy vegetable dish, while the bark of its stem is used to make ropes, and the stem itself serves as firewood—making it a truly multipurpose resource.
Lakda is not only nutritious but also highly beneficial for health. For many rural and tribal families, it plays an important role in supporting livelihoods, especially for those with limited resources. Despite its humble presence, it is appreciated by people across communities.
Interestingly, the Lakda found here is different from the commonly known variety. Its leaves have a reddish tint instead of green, and its fruit appears in a dull, earthy color rather than bright red. However, the taste and shape of both varieties remain almost identical.
This makes Lakda a truly unique and valuable plant. It deserves recognition, conservation, and promotion as part of our rich local biodiversity. 🌱
